Dr James McKeon works as a Consultant Physician in private practice at the Holy Spirit Northside Private Hospital (HSNPH) in Brisbane from Monday to Friday where he provides consultations in Thoracic and Sleep medicine for Out-patients and In-patients. On week-ends and holidays, his inpatients at HSNPH are seen by either himself or other experienced physicians on an organized roster.

Procedural Work

He regularly does procedural work at HSNPH Endoscopy Unit, including bronchoscopies, lung biopsies, pleural aspirations, insertion of intercostal catheter and Endobronchial Ultra-sound-guided (EBUS) fine-needle aspiration of mediastinal nodes.

In-Patient Treatment

He admits patients to HSNPH for in-patient care if necessary. He accepts patients from the Emergency Room (ER) at HSNPH after referral by Physicians in the ER. He also accepts patients for admission after referral by other doctors working at various Public Hospitals in Brisbane.

Thoracic Medicine

From 1983 to 1985, Dr McKeon gained experience in fibre optic bronchoscopy, percutaneous fine-needle aspiration lung biopsy, pleural biopsy, intercostal catheter placement and interpretation of results from the respiratory function laboratory in Respiratory Medicine Units in Brisbane.

In 1986 and 1987, he had the opportunity to work as a senior registrar at the Royal Newcastle Hospital where he gained considerable experience in sleep disorders, including obstructive sleep apnoea, sleep-associated hypoxaemia in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and obesity-hypoventilation syndrome.  He became familiar with the equipment used for polysomnography and is competent in staging sleep, reporting on sleep studies and supervising therapy with nasal continuous positive airways pressure (CPAP).

From 1988 until December 2012, Dr McKeon was employed as a Senior Visiting Thoracic Physician at the Prince Charles Hospital, Chermside.  He worked at The Chest Clinic, 63 George Street, Brisbane from 1988 until 1998 where he gained experience in the management of mycobacterial diseases (e.g. MTB and MAC).  He also provided a bronchoscopy service for the Redcliffe General Hospital from 1992 to 1995.

From mid-1988 until 1999, Dr McKeon provided a consultative service in thoracic medicine in Bundaberg once a month.  In 1993, he was appointed Visiting Thoracic Physician for the Bundaberg Base Hospital for two sessions a month. 

Memberships and Appointments

Dr James McKeon is a member of the General Medicine Assessment Tribunal (GMAT) and composite medical assessment tribunals for Q-Comp (The Workers’ Compensation Regulatory Authority). The appointment is for the period 1/11/2006 – 31/10/2018.

He completed training in the Guidelines for Evaluation of Permanent Impairment (GEPI) on 25/06/2015.

Dr McKeon has extensive experience in the diagnosis and management of occupational lung disease including asbestos-related problems since 1983 and he regularly provides medico-legal reports on patients with occupational lung diseases.
